Reconnaissance (2)

Yonghoon walked down the street like an ordinary Hunter. He carefully inspected the areas he had heard about from the Hunter who had been driving earlier. Fortunately, there were plenty of Hunters roaming the streets.

Yonghoon’s movements among them didn’t seem much different from the other Hunters to the wary soldiers.

Yonghoon passed by the soldiers’ living quarters, the vehicle repair shop, and the armory.

The armory was being guarded thoroughly.

Surrounded by multiple layers of barbed wire fences and patrolled by soldiers inside, the armory building looked impossible to infiltrate.

Yonghoon stared at the armory for a moment before moving toward another location.

Time passed, and the sun began to set. It was time to regroup.

With little to show for his efforts, Yonghoon headed toward the Rosemary Inn, where the other members were staying.

Following the signs on the street toward the inn alley, Yonghoon quickly found the Rosemary Inn. His truck was parked right in front of it.

Yonghoon entered the inn. It seemed the first floor was also used as a cafeteria and lobby.

He spotted Eunseo sitting in one corner of the cafeteria.

Several men were seated at her table, chatting with her. Every time she asked a question, they eagerly scrambled to answer.

Yonghoon chuckled at the sight. It looked just like a queen surrounded by her butlers.

As Yonghoon entered, Eunseo waved goodbye to the men she had been talking with and stood up.

The men, startled by her movement, also stood up, only to sigh when they saw her link arms with Yonghoon.

They exchanged helpless smiles with each other. It seemed likely they would go for a drink together later.

The organization members had prepared a room for Yonghoon and his companions. Yonghoon, along with Eunseo, went up to the second floor, opened the door to his assigned room, and entered.

Once inside, Yonghoon glanced at Eunseo’s arm, which was still linked with his.

“Why?”

Eunseo gave him a sly smile, then subtly slipped her arm free.

“Did you find out anything?”

In response to Yonghoon’s question, she sat down on a nearby chair.

“Nothing too impressive. Everyone’s just stirred up because of the recent government announcement. People are also suspicious about the incident that happened in Berlin City. There’s even talk about some kind of super villain appearing.”

As she said the last part, Eunseo looked at Yonghoon.

Her words made Yonghoon fall into deep thought. It seemed his actions had created a crack somewhere.

“Also, it seems the Rebels aren’t very well regarded among the people either.”

Yonghoon nodded at her words. After all, to the average citizen, the Rebels were nothing more than terrorists.

“Seems like a lot of Raiders are running wild under the Rebels’ name. Or maybe the Rebels really are just Raiders.”

Yonghoon gave a bitter smile at her words.

As expected, those Raiders didn’t seem to be genuine Rebels.

In the end, the Rebels appeared to be a gathering of the defeated city’s Awakened, Linkers, and Raiders.

It seemed clear that they shouldn’t get too close to the Rebels either.

“In any case, we just need to get small favors like this. We’ll have to keep our distance as much as possible.”

At Yonghoon’s words, Eunseo looked a bit disappointed.

“That old lady seemed like a really good person, though.”

It seemed Eunseo had taken a liking to the Linker who had given them the shield.

After briefly reminiscing about her, Eunseo shot a sideways glance at Yonghoon.

“Weren’t we supposed to drop the formalities?”

Unlike with Sunhee, Yonghoon had been mixing formal and informal speech with Eunseo.

They had agreed to speak casually after the last Dimensional Movement, but Yonghoon had reverted to formal speech again.

“Ah, my mistake.”

Yonghoon gave her a half-hearted apology, and she shot him a mild glare.

Eunseo let out a small sigh and continued the conversation.

A moment later, while Eunseo was talking, they heard someone coming up behind the door.

Barely audible footsteps-Sunhee’s footsteps.

Soon, the door opened, and Sunhee appeared with a grim expression.

What Sunhee said darkened the expressions of the group.

“I overheard something while sneaking out. It seems they perform Dimensional Movement once a day.”

“That means another one will cross over tomorrow.”

At Yonghoon’s words, Sunhee nodded.

“But that doesn’t mean we can attack tomorrow. They already said two Dimensional Beasts have crossed over, and we don’t know how many Awakened have crossed too.”

Yonghoon was right. The beasts that would cross later were a problem, but so were the ones that had already crossed.

It was too late to act in sync with the Dimensional Beast crossing tomorrow. They had no way of knowing where the beast would land. They needed to finish their mission quickly and return to their original dimension.

Yonghoon looked at Sunhee and Eunseo.

“Let’s do it today.”

At Eunseo’s determined words, Sunhee also nodded.

Yonghoon and the two women huddled together to plan their operation.

◆◆◆

Lieutenant General Eunseo turned her head side to side. It had been three days without sleep, and she was starting to feel the fatigue.

“Why don’t you go inside and get some sleep?”

Her adjutant next to her spoke up. She looked around.

Ten high-level personal guard units, her subordinates, were stationed around the tower, either sitting or standing.

However, a few of them were yawning from fatigue.

“You’ve all gotten too lazy. Just a few sleepless nights and you’re already yawning.”

At Lieutenant General Eunseo’s words, the slackened Hunters quickly straightened up.

“It is boring, though. They haven’t appeared in other cities either.”

Leaning against the machine that looked like a tower, Lieutenant General Eunseo pushed herself off and stepped forward.

“Maybe they returned to their own dimension after being chased by you a few days ago?”

Her short-haired adjutant cautiously shared his thoughts.

At his words, she recalled the image of Yonghoon she had seen when accessing the Dimensional Connector to C Dimension.

Coldness, madness, perseverance, determination.

Calm under normal circumstances, cold during war and battle, but when immersed in combat, he became aggressive, charging straight toward his goal without knowing how to give up.

If he weren’t an enemy, she might have fallen for him.

“No way. He’s not the kind of man to just retreat.”

At Lieutenant General Eunseo’s firm statement, the adjutant stepped back.

She spoke to her personal guard subordinates.

“Tomorrow, the personal guard units dispatched to A Dimension will return. Starting tomorrow, we’ll rotate shifts in two groups. Just hang in there for one more day.”

“Yes, ma’am!”

About ten men and women straightened their posture and answered.

“Alright then, I’ll head into the office. It’ll be more comfortable for everyone that way.”

At Lieutenant General Eunseo’s words, the personal guard units smiled slightly.

She waved to them, and her subordinates stood and saluted her.

Lieutenant General Eunseo began walking away, with her adjutant following behind. The multiple spears strapped to her back swayed from side to side.

As she walked, Eunseo suddenly came to a halt. The swaying spears stilled, and one of them slid into her hand. Her expression sharpened.

“Lieutenant General?”

At the adjutant’s question from behind, Lieutenant General Eunseo answered sharply.

“He’s here! It’s him!”

“Huh? But the spatial movement alarm didn’t go off?”

“But my instincts are telling me.”

Eunseo began channeling Dimensional Power into her spear. A smile spread across her face.

Eunseo looked straight ahead. It was the direction her instincts pointed to. A small door on the far wall of the hall silently opened.

And from that door, Yonghoon appeared.

Yonghoon looked slightly surprised at Eunseo’s smiling face. He returned her smile.

The glowing spear in his hand thrust forward. The spear leapt through space and appeared in front of the tower.

The spear’s light grew even stronger.

The Awakened standing in front of the tower reacted quickly.

Two of them stretched their hands toward the spear that had appeared in midair. Dimensional Power burst from their hands, and the space around the spear distorted.

The glowing spear vanished on the spot.

Boom!

A loud explosion echoed from outside the building, and a bright light shone through the windows high above.

Yonghoon’s face turned to one of surprise, while Eunseo, seeing this, wore a delighted expression.

“Haha, did you really think you could set a trap without preparing to block a technique I’ve already used once?”

Yonghoon frowned at her words, which she spoke with a smile.

‘Damn, when dimensional tunnels overlap, does it bounce things to a different place?’

One of the Awakened who had reached out was the same person who had chased him with Eunseo a few days ago, and the other was a woman he was seeing for the first time, with a quiet demeanor. But she was clearly a spatial ability user as well.

Lieutenant General Eunseo walked toward Yonghoon with a smile.

And from behind, the middle-aged spatial ability user and the Detection-type Awakened who had blocked the attack earlier rushed toward Lieutenant General Eunseo.

Yonghoon’s eyes gleamed as he saw the two rushing at her. He abandoned the shattered spear and grabbed another, swinging it through the air.

The spear passed through the distorted space and popped out beside the two running toward Lieutenant General Eunseo.

Clang! Clang!

However, the spears that popped out failed to strike the enemies, bouncing off in a spray of sparks.

In front of them stood a man with both hands raised. He was Lieutenant General Eunseo’s adjutant. With a friendly look, he wore shiny greaves strapped to both arms.

The greaves were damaged from the earlier clash. However, the wounds were rapidly healing.

It seemed to be made from a monster’s shell with regenerative abilities.

‘Defense-type Awakened!’

He didn’t have a shield, but he was a Defense-type Awakened. Thanks to his interference, Yonghoon failed to prevent them from joining up with Eunseo.

But Yonghoon didn’t seem to mind much.

Yonghoon glanced down at his hand. In the hand not holding the spear, he was carrying a wooden box about the size of a suitcase.

He had attacked them with the spear while simultaneously creating a dimensional tunnel to retrieve it.

Fortunately, the size was just barely manageable. The space was still stable. He could create another dimensional tunnel.

Yonghoon created another dimensional tunnel. Confirming Eunseo’s figure beyond the tunnel, he pushed the wooden box through. The box disappeared.

After confirming the box had vanished, Yonghoon tilted his head at the sight of Lieutenant General Eunseo and the other Awakened approaching slowly.

Strangely, they didn’t seem to be in a hurry.

In any case, his special attack had been blocked, and he had failed to eliminate the Special Ability Users who were about to join Eunseo. He had only succeeded in one thing.

Judging by the situation, it was time to flee.

Yonghoon looked at Lieutenant General Eunseo one last time and opened a dimensional tunnel.

His figure disappeared from the hall.

“Got it!”

As Yonghoon’s figure vanished, Lieutenant General Eunseo and the other Awakened began to run.

They arrived at the spot where Yonghoon had disappeared, and as before, an Awakened capable of detecting spatial movement placed a hand in the air.

They had refrained from attacking during the battle with Yonghoon to avoid damaging the dimensional Warp Zone.

Anyway, since tracking was possible, it was better for the battle to take place outside.

The Awakened who had raised his hand grabbed the spatial ability user’s arm with his other hand. Dimensional Power flowed from his hand into the spatial ability user’s arm.

It was the method of transmitting spatial movement coordinates to the spatial ability user.

“We’re departing.”

At the spatial ability user’s words, Lieutenant General Eunseo turned around and shouted.

“Stick to the plan! Second unit, get ready! Everyone else, stay sharp!”

“Yes, ma’am!”

Responding to Lieutenant General Eunseo’s command, the members answered, and she and two of her personal guard units disappeared from the spot.

Thus began the chase between Yonghoon and Eunseo.
